At 5896m the snowcapped Mt Kilimanjaro is no doubt the highest peak in Africa and one of the continents magnificent sights. Mt Kilimanjaro raises through lush raiforest,alphine meadows and barren lunar landscape to the twin summits of kibo and mawenzi.. For most people who visit Kilimanjaro their aim and dream is to reach the Uhuru peak . There many routes for trekking in Mt Kilimanjaro . The Machame route has a gradual ascent before approaching the summit via mweka route. Day 1
An early start takes you to Machame gate. After registering at the park gates begin trekking through the rain forest on a winding trail for 5-7 hours to Machame hut campsite 3100m. Set up a tent in time for dinner and overnight. Day 2
After breakfast leave the glades of the rain forest and continue ascending, crossing a little valley and steep rocky ridge covered with heather. The route that swerves west into a river gorge at 3658m (5-7 hours). Dinner and overnight. Day 3
From Shira plateau continue trekking east toward lava tower called ‘the shark’s tooth’. Shortly after the tower you come to a junction leading to ‘Arrow Glacier’. Continue to Barranco hut campsite, a 5-7 hours trek away at 3950m. Dinner and overnight. Day 4
Leaving Barranco continue walking on a steep ridge passing the Barranco wall, through Karanga valley. Continue trekking to the Barafu hut campsite to arrive in time for dinner and overnight. The duration of the days trek is approximately 8-9 hours. Two peaks Kibo and Mawezi can be seen from this point. Day 5
Just after midnight trek to Stella point, (5745m) on the way it Kilimanjaro highest summit Uhuru Peak at 5895m. This part of the climb takes about 8 hours and is fairly strenuous! From the summit descend to Mweka hut campsite, 3100m, for an overnight. This art of the trek takes approximately 5 hours. Day 6
The day is spent descending to the Mweka Park gates – a 3-4 hour trek. Transfer to Arusha. |
