12 Days Rendile Camel Walking and Camping Expedition

This rugged expedition covering over 2000KM is a safari designed to take you up into the heart of the Northern Frontier District via Mt. Kenya, Meru National Park and Samburu Game Reserve. You will traverse along some of Africa's worst roads, see beautiful mountain forest surrounded on all sides by hot dusty deserts and into Ndotto Mountains (Gurunet) where you walk or take a camel ride with the Rendiles, eventually arriving at the Jade Sea ( Lake Turkana). You will see a great variety of tribes (Rendile, Samburu, Pokot, Turkana, and Elmolo among others) and cross the Kaisut Desert to Maralal, Lake Baringo, and Lake Bogoria.

Day 1: Nairobi – Mountain Mt Kenya

Drive to Mt Kenya region. Dinner and overnight at Mt Rock campsite

 Day 2: Mt. Kenya - Meru National Park

After breakfast, depart for Meru National ark for game viewing and walking. Dinner and overnight camping.

Day 3: Meru Park – Samburu

Leaving the slopes of Mountain Kenya we proceed to the mainly dry scrub land and open Savannah plains of Samburu Game Reserve. Here the Ewaso Nyiro River supports a wide variety of game. Dinner and overnight camping.

Day 4: Samburu

Full day to enjoy the different scenery and wildlife including Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe, leopard, lion and Oryx. Dinner and overnight camping.

Day 5: Samburu Park – Gurunet

Depart early to Laisamis via Isiolo on the Marsabit road. From Laisamis we head west through the Kaisut desert to Gurunet. Dinner and overnight camping at Ngurunet, the heart of the proud Rendile tribe.

Day 6: Walking

Full Day at Gurunet area interacting and camel riding with the local Rendiles. The route may vary but basically we head south of the Ndotos to the Malgis Lugger, which bring water from Wamba, Maralal and Baragoi areas. To tour this hilly and nomadic region. You will come across the local people as they go about their daily chores. However, this region is sparsely populated and you will enjoy the peace and quiet it offers as you trek on camel backs in the acacia bushes. You will spend the night at a river bend in the middle of nowhere.

Day 7: Walking

Breakfast at leisure. Then depart through a different route from the Malgis towards the Ndotos and Keno river. Keno is a small clear stream nice to wash in and cool off. We head back to our campsite. You have a chance to see zebra, gerenuks, ostrich, hyenas and a variety of birdlife as you trek. Dinner and overnight camping at a different site from yesterdays.

Day 8: Gurunet – Lake Turkana

Depart by vehicle to Lake Turkana and Loiyangalani via south Horr. Again as is characteristic of this region you will meet the proud red orched Samburu who form part of the nomadic tribes of Kenya who inhibit this region and move from on place to the other in search of pasture and water for their cattle’s and goats . Dinner and overnight camping.

Day 9: Lake Turkana

We spend the day relaxing and bathing only interrupted by a short boat excursion to visit the surrounding areas. In addition, we visit Loiyangalani and the community settled there while in the evening we may visit one of the Turkana Manyattas for traditional dances under a star studded sky at an extra cost if clients wish. Unforgettable experience.

Day 10: Lake Turkana – Maralal

We depart early and head south to Maralal via South Horr and Baragoi another forested area. The Samburu abound in their red-ochre. The landscape is magnificent and this is the closest you will get to the unspoilt African Image as the region is yet to embrace the western culture that has changed the African people. Overnight camping at Maralal town.

Day 11: Maralal – Lake Baringo

Heading South from Maralal we visit Lake Baringo where we do some bird-watching or take an evening boat ride to see the Hippos and crocodiles. On the way we meet the Pokots, another tribe that has retained their cultural practices and are proud of it. Overnight in a campsite.

Day 12: Lake Baringo - Nairobi

Early morning we leave Lake Baringo and proceed to Lake Bogoria. Lake Bogoria is famed for its hot geysers and abundant of birdlife including the pink flamingoes that flock the Lake. Later proceed to Nairobi arriving late afternoon.
